Go Volunteering

Building a Brighter Future: Developing a scalable volunteering platform to connect organisations, volunteers, and communities.

Executive Summary

Engaged Communities CIC (EC), a Plymouth-based social enterprise, partnered with Coreblue to transform their volunteering platform into a scalable, user-centric solution. Coreblue migrated EC’s legacy WordPress platform to a custom-built cloud-first system, creating a dynamic volunteer marketplace and management hubs for organisations and businesses. The result is a secure, high-performance platform poised to drive significant social impact while supporting EC’s revenue and growth ambitions.

About the client

Engaged Communities CIC (EC) is a UK-based social enterprise dedicated to creating community-focused technology that drives social impact. Their mission is to connect volunteers, organisations, and businesses through innovative digital solutions, fostering stronger, more engaged communities.

The Challenge

EC’s existing WordPress-based platform was insufficient for their growing ambitions. It lacked the functionality, scalability, and user experience required to support their vision of delivering world-class community technology. Key challenges included:

  • Limited Functionality: The platform couldn’t support complex features such as volunteer matching, management hubs, or robust reporting.
  • Scalability Issues: The platform needed to grow alongside EC’s expanding user base of organisations, volunteers, and corporate partners.
  • Data Security: Ensuring the safe handling of sensitive and personal information was critical for building trust within the community.

To achieve their goals, EC required a technology partner capable of designing and delivering a secure, scalable, and market-ready application.

The Solution

Coreblue adopted a collaborative, agile approach to deliver a tailored solution aligned with EC’s vision.

Key Deliverables:

  1. Cloud-First Platform: Coreblue built a robust cloud-based system capable of handling high traffic volumes and ensuring seamless performance.
  2. Volunteer Marketplace: A user-friendly hub for organisations to connect with motivated volunteers, streamlining the recruitment process.
  3. Volunteer Management Hub: Designed for Volunteer Managers, this tool unites teams within one platform for easier communication and management.
  4. Employer Hub: Supporting businesses in launching and managing employee volunteering schemes, aligning profit with purpose.
  5. Security-First Approach: Leveraging Coreblue’s Cyber Essentials Plus certification, the platform was built to meet the highest security standards, safeguarding user data.

The Implementation Process

The project followed a phased, iterative development cycle:

  • Discovery & Planning: Coreblue worked closely with EC to define the platform’s requirements, aligning development with their strategic goals.
  • MVP Development: The Minimum Viable Product (MVP) included core features that allowed for a soft launch to key stakeholders.
  • Iterative Enhancements: Based on user feedback and strategic priorities, new functionalities were added in subsequent phases.
  • Collaborative Roadmap: A long-term roadmap was co-created to ensure continuous innovation and alignment with EC’s evolving needs.

Results & Impact

The collaboration between Coreblue and EC delivered transformative results:

  • Enhanced User Experience: A seamless, user-friendly platform for both volunteers and organisations.
  • Scalable Infrastructure: A robust foundation ready to support future growth and increased user engagement.
  • Improved Security: A highly secure system, giving users confidence in data protection.
  • Long-Term Partnership: Coreblue continues to work with EC on phase two of the platform, adding innovative features and optimising user experience.
  • Roadmap development: Coreblue has actively assisted Executive Nexus in planning new products that will complement the existing platform. This collaborative effort showcases the expanded role we have taken on, going beyond platform maintenance and development. By leveraging our expertise and understanding of the platform, we have contributed to shaping Executive Nexus’ product roadmap, enabling them to envision and execute new initiatives that align with their strategic objectives.

What’s next?

Coreblue is gearing up for phase two of the GoVolunteering platform, introducing new features to enhance user engagement and drive further social impact. By continuing this partnership, Coreblue and EC are ensuring the platform remains at the forefront of community technology.
